Bridges are the most significant elements of a highway network. Their partial or general collapse would cause a drastic problem both in social and economical matters. Inspection is a procedure to guarantee satisfactory performance and appropriate serviceability of bridges over their lifespan. Inspection in regular intervals is the first step in bridges maintenance managing. Based on the inspection results, the bridge condition is assessed and the existing defects are evaluated for the need of repair. Total cost of bridge maintenance and repair can be reduced by regular inspection and also their lifespan would be increased. In this paper a method is developed for appropriate inspection of bridges. This method is based on the standards of the other countries, inspection assessment of 150 bridges in Tehran and experts’ opinion which were collected through questionnaire. The method includes the intervals and levels(types of elements to be inspected and the depth of inspection) of inspection.
